Summer Reading Assignment 2013
There are several purposes for having a summer reading assignment. One is simply to start us all on common ground. It gives us something to talk about right away, which will help us build our learning community. Two, it exposes you to a type of book that you might not normally choose for yourself, which will broaden your literature knowledge. Finally, it will give you something else to do besides completely zone out and watch television all summer long.
Over the summer, please read Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, and be ready for a close reading quote test and a multiple choice test the first week of school. In addition to these tests, we will have frequent discussion and a research paper on this novel, so if you do not read it, you will almost certainly struggle the first several weeks. Also, watching the movie in lieu of reading the novel will not help you as much as you might think. Directors often change ideas and content from the original work, so if you must watch a film version, please read the novel first. Finally, after each chapter, you may want to write a short summary in the book or on paper to remember what you read. Most students who take the time to do this perform quite well on the tests and research paper.
A sample quote question for the test.
In 12 sentences or less, identify to whom the quote is referring and the significance of the passage. "The business of her life was to get her daughters married."
Rationale/Content/summary: Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice is written at a high lexile level, using sophisticated vocabulary, which will challenge and improve readers’ skills. However, the themes are timeless, allowing students to relate to the characters’ experiences and opinions. We will discuss these relatable themes, such as the battle of the sexes, the purpose and meaning of love and marriage, pride and prejudice, and moral versus immoral behavior. Happy reading, honors students!
